The Olympus DS-2500 is an affordable, entry-level Professional Dictation Recorder that provides superior sound quality through a speech-optimized, mechanically isolated microphone; flexibility in recording modes, including conference and dictation modes. The DS-2500 utilizes Olympus's proprietary DS2 file format to provide excellent playback through a computer, standard 3.5mm headphone jack or the integrated 23mm/300mW speaker. Through the included Olympus Dictation Software (Olympus Standard DSS Player, not Professional), once plugged in via USB,  the Olympus digital recorder will automatically transfer recordings across the network or to your local hard drive. You can then manually attach and send dictation audio files via email, or have them ready for your transcriptionist, who have a choice of using the Olympus AS-2400 o AS-7000 Transcriber.

The baby brother of the DS-7000 and little brother of the Olympus DS-3500, the DS-2500 features the good audio quality and some workflow capabilities and only sets aside certain creature comforts; specifically, the DS-2500 uses a monochrome LCD, where the Olympus DS-3500 has a color LCD. Also, the DS-2500 does not have the 128bit and 256bit encryption or automatic emailing like the Olympus DS-3500 or DS-7000 which is needed in professions requiring security (as in HIPAA medical use).

The Olympus DS-2500 records in "DS2 " recording mode only (does not record in DSS mode also, like the DS-3500 and DS-7000 does), and does not send email attachments automatically when docked. However, it is suitable for sending files over local networks (say, from the dictator to the typist). The Olympus digital recorder uses rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries included (rather than Lithium Ion like the Olympus DS-3500), or even uses regular AAA alkaline batteries.
